Ermolao II Barbaro

Ermolao Barbaro (Venice, 1548 – 22 December 1622) was an Italian Catholic patriarch.

The great-grandson of Francesco Barbaro and son of Marcantonio Barbaro (Procurator of San Marco), he worked for his brother Francesco when he was the Patriarch of Aquileia. On 12 February 1596, Pope Clement VIII simultaneously appointed him coadjutor to the patriarchate cum iure successionis (with the right of succession) and Titular Archbishop of Tyre.

Upon the death of his brother (1616), he was appointed patriarch on 23 August of the same year, but could not make his solemn entry into Udine because of the war between Venice and the Archduchy of Austria (War of Gradisca). The solemn entry into Udine took place on 18 July 1618, when peace had been restored. In any case, he preferred to continue living in Venice and did not move to Friuli.

Previously, in the consistory of 22 May 1617, Antonio Grimani, the Bishop of Torcello, was appointed as his coadjutor, cum futurae successionis spe.

During his episcopate, disputes and controversy were reignited regarding the patriarchate’s jurisdiction over the parishes and prelates of certain archducal territories (mainly Gradisca and Gorizia).

Ermolao Barbaro died in Venice on 22 December 1622 and he was laid to rest in San Giorgio Maggiore. His body, and that of his brother and predecessor Francesco, were later moved to the funerary monument that was built in Sant’Antonio Abate in Udine.
